What type of businesses should start an AED program?

    • Any company is encourage to start an AED program regardless of their size or location.  Businesses such as large corporations, health clubs, pools, doctors and dentists offices, malls, schools and anywhere people gather are a great place to start.

Why should you consider implementing a program?

    • OSHA recommends that workplaces train employees in CPR, first aid and the use of an AED.
    • There are 300,000-400,000 deaths per year in the United States from cardiac arrest.
    • Jobs with shift work, high stress, and exposure to certain chemicals and electrical hazards increase the risks of heart disease and cardiac arrest.

Why is an AED necessary if employees are trained in CPR?

    • A victim in cardiac arrest is not breathing and the heart is not beating.
    • Abnormal heart rhythms, with ventricular fibrillation (VF) being the most common, cause cardiac arrest.
    • Treatment of VF with immediate electronic defibrillation can increase survival to more than 90 percent.
    • With each minute of delay in defibrillation, 10 percent fewer victims survive.

What is neccessary to start and maintain an AED program in Missouri?

Missouri State Statute Section 190.092 states that the following must be in place:

    • A prescription is neccessary for the AED unit.
    • The program must be overseen by a physician.
    • The program must have a written policy and procedure manual.
    • Local EMS must be notified that the unit is placed in service.
    • OSHA recommends the use and implementation of an AED program in a Trade News Release.  Read the release here.

Is it difficult to learn how to use an AED?

    • No.  AEDs are made to be easy to use.  In one study sixth grade students were easily trained how to use the units in a mock cardiac arrest.
    • The AED unit interprets the cardiac rhythm and instructs the user how to proceed.  The user does not need to be trained to read an EKG.
